Master in Innovation and Research in Informatics (MIRI)
The Department of Computer Architecture offers two specialization tracks in the MIRI master program:"Computer Networks and Distributed Systems" and "High Performance Computing". MIRI is a 120 ECTS or a two-year master program, supported by world class research at UPC and collaboration with our many research partners from industry and public research labs from all over the world with active research projects (such as Intel Research, the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, the European Commission, the Cluster network of universities, ERCIM, Telefonica Research, Yahoo Research, and several industrial research labs).
These two specialised tracks are designed to provide a solid background in different aspects of research in informatics, while preparing its graduates to become experts in either the field of Computer Networks and Distributed Systems, or in High Performance Computing.
Course overview
The master is structured in a common part with 5 common courses (30 ECTS), 8 courses for each speciality (48 ECTS), 2 elective courses (12 ECTS) and a master thesis (30 ECTS). See below for details about each specialization.
Master thesis
The objective is for students to demonstrate the individual skills acquired during the programme and apply them to solve a realistic problem in industrial or academic research. The student should write a thesis report and present, demonstrate and defend the results. The thesis project may be proposed by the student, a researcher, a company, a research lab or any other external organization.
Computer Networks and Distributed Systems
The students that graduate this specialization will also achieve research skills in optimization, game theory, stochastic processes and network and distributed systems modeling. Moreover, the students will achieve capacities related to the design and modeling of descentralized and scalable systems, cloud computing, fault tolerant systems, future internet networks, mobile internet, Internet of things, security and applications. More details here about the courses in this speciality.
High Performance Computing
The aim of this specialization is to train researchers in the fields of computer architecture and/or supercomputing. Graduates will have in-depth knowledge of: digital systems and microprocessor design, supercomputer systems and parallel programming.
Professionals who have taken this area of specialization possess all the knowledge and skills required in companies/institutions with R&D centers who want to incorporate emerging technologies. This specialization fulfills the requirements for joining the PhD program on Computer Architecture and Technology.
This specialization is taught by highly qualified professors, such as leading researchers from Intel and BSC (Barcelona Supercomputing Center), and professors with past research experience at companies like IBM, HP, Compaq or Oracle. More details here about the courses in this speciality.
